Something for something for Sophie

POSTED BY: Jon February 13, 2010

The Something For Sophie lads have been close friends of the studio for a few years now and we love them. They are a young pop rock outfit from Brighton with catchy tunes and interesting breaks. Big fans of the uplift, they believe ‘melody loves company’, and the whole thing is awash with harmonies that just want to pull your face into a smile.

When they approached us about the launch of their EP Any Note Will Do, we were super excited. We love doing album art and their ‘glass half full’ attitude made this project one of our favourites so far.

The EP was due for launch some time around September and they wanted the main artwork to focus around a winter scene. Our goal was to get that winter feeling whilst echoing the positive sound of the songs. We decided to go with clean-edged vector illustration that focused on the bright blue sky more than the sombre greys. We drew some inspiration from Greg Abbott and his incredible character design, bringing some animal life into the landscape. Is it a beaver, groundhog, or sacred bear? You decide!

We struggled to find a font that worked with the style, so in the end we drew all of the headings and titles ourselves. Each word was customised according to its position and layout and we resisted the temptation to just ctrl+C, ctrl+V.

The band decided to give us a bit more artistic license with the inlay. “The sky’s the limit” they said… And it literally was. We followed on from where the cover stopped, starting at cloud level and fading up into a star filled ozone layer. This gave us a lot more space, pun intended, for us to place the lyrics. We kept continuity by re-introducing the birds from the front and adding a charicatured sun, all of whom appear to be singing along with the songs.

The boys were super happy with the result and it was all printed, packed, and sold out within the first month! After the second pressing they gave us a copy and we asked if we could share it with you… They said any friend of ours is a friend of theirs, and so the EP is available for your listening pleasure by clicking on the bar below. Enjoy!

We loved the work so much that we also created this wallpaper for our desktops! Seeing as we’re in the mood for sharing, feel free to download it. Let us know if you dig it :)
